We have been eyeing travel trailers for the last year or so. We thought we had figured out what we wanted last year. We were going to go with a 19 foot trailer that was only a little over 5,000 pounds. So when we bought our truck we had a small trailer in mind. Well about two months ago we went to see if Anthem RV had anything different than what we already looked at. When we showed up to the lot it was empty. We found a tech who told us they were having a show in Peoria that weekend and all the trailers were out.
We headed down to Peoria with the intention of just looking and the guy ended up sell us a Rockwood 2702ws. Dry weight it's at 6,450 pounds and our truck can pull 7,300. So this is when I wished I would have bought the eco-boost which can pull 10,300 pounds. I see an eco-boost in the future however for now this will work.
About a month ago we decided to take out trailer on our first trip. I booked a spot right on Watson Lake in Prescott. About a week before our trip the forecast changed to snow. Due to the fact I didn't want my first trip being a drive in the snow we let Adri ditch school that Friday. We started getting a mild snow on the way into town but nothing that really stuck. Within ten minutes of getting the trailer parked though it was a full on snow storm.
Throughout the day it would snow then it would melt, then start all over again. We drove out to Culver's for some ice cream and it was near white out conditions while we were there. Then ten minutes later it all melted. We stopped by Wal-Mart on the way back to camp because our trailer has a dvd but no blu-ray and I have to have a blu-ray. Plus the kids wanted to watch Goonies so we had to find a Goonies blu-ray. When we walked out it was full on blizzard conditions.
The kid's beds have plugin so they were nice and toasty at night. So toasty that even though it was 16 degrees outside Adri decided to open her window. She got a good verbal lashing for that one. By 3AM Dean had kicked me out of my bed and I had to sleep with Zach. It's a good thing the kids have big beds that can each sleep two.
The following day we did a hike trying to get to the dam. There were too many rocks though to complete the hike with Dean so we'll have to find the dam another day. We ended up going back to downtown for some pizza and ice cream before having another movie night with the kids. On the way back to camp we drove through a community built into the boulders. It was one of the coolest communities I have ever seen. The pictures just don't do it justice.
The next day we packed it up and headed home. This trip was a learning experience. Had to find out how well the truck will tow, how to setup everything, drain, everything etc. The truck did pretty good. We took on some of the biggest hills we'll find anywhere and we survived so I think we can manage without the eco-boost for the next 3 years. We have a clear sewage pipe so I let the kids watch when we dropped our black water. They thought it was hilarious and waved to their turds as they flushed through. All in all it was a good trip and we are getting ready for two more before the big one.
