Vegas / Idaho Vacation 2024

This last summer we fly out to Vegas and after visiting my sister in laws for a couple days we drove up to Idaho to spend time with my family for a week before driving back to Vegas.

Vegas had just come out of a nasty heatwave where they broke their all time high record of 117 and hit 120. By the time we got there I think it was down to 113. I was looking for suggestions from friends for good tacos and one of my friends told me to go to Tacos El Gordo. They had the best pastor tacos I have had, with a pineapple on top.

The drive through Utah sucked. We stopped in Salt Lake City and met up with my family before going to Idaho. Our first stop was at Lava Hot Springs where we did some tubing and spent the day at a not so great waterpark. The tubing was fun and not as rough as I was expecting. With my age, back issues, and having a little one to watch after I'm really not a fan of tubing with currents and sharp rocks and some of the reviews by drama queens made me think it was going to be really dangerous. I think those reviews were written by people that never leave their couch though. The current wasn't too bad and as long as you don't do anything stupid you stay in the tubes. It was actually a lot more fun than I was expected.

After Lava Hot Springs we went up to Rexburg for a few days. The highlight of that trip was our daytrip to Jenny Lake in Wyoming. We did a short hike there when Dean was a baby but this time we did a much longer hike, somewhere around 5 miles round trip. We saw moose, a lot of wildflowers, a waterfall and some rapids, and had a great view of the lake. We also did a half day rafting trip down Henry's Fork that I enjoyed. We have stayed in the Riverside campground there a couple times and the views are amazing. Seeing it from the river was even better. Everything is so green and the trees are huge.

After that we didn't do much in Rexburg except a hike up an extinct volcano.

We were supposed to go right back to Vegas but decided to stay in St. George for the night on the way back. We met up with an old friend for ice cream and then the next day went to Zion for a few hours. It was really hot in Zion, I think around 104 that day, so we just did a short hike early, swam in the river, and then left. We had pizza at my favorite spot in Springdale and then I took Zach to shoot the Browning Buckmark .22LR pistol on the way back. I bought that pistol right before we left Arizona and only shot it once out there. Natalie also took a turn with that pistol and I think she liked it. There's little kick and it's very accurate. Zach loved the fact that he could get 10 rounds out in just a couple seconds.

I waited way too long to catchup on my blog and I already forgot half the trip. Next time I'll do better.
