Last month I decided to try a different trail at Black Mountain. About an hour into my hike I ran into four cows. One was a calf, one a cow, and two probably Steers (It may have been a bull but I didn't get close enough to check for balls)" So when I came up on these cows I was a little startled. One of the Steers looked at me and kinda stomped it's foot which made me nervous. The good news is that I had my .45 with me. The bad news I don't know if .45 will stop a charging Steer.
So I approached with caution and walked slowly behind the trail. Eventually I got to a point where they were at a switchback and I cut the trail and passed them. I then continued for a couple miles. Well coming back they were back on the trail. I decided to go above the trail and go around them this time. This was a stupid idea that could have gone really bad. I get up above them but at this time I'm walking on the edge of a cliff that drops a couple hundred feet. If the Steer would have charged I would have been thrown over a cliff. So I realized I made a stupid decision and started pushing back to the trail. At this point one of the Steers looked at me and started to run. For a second I thought he was coming for me but he ran the other way.
So I managed to get around the herd and I come around the back side of the mountain. Then just as I'm starting to make moo noises guess what comes over the hill and cuts me off on the trail... Yeah, the same herd. So buy now I was annoyed and done with it. I tried a different approach, start yelling. It actually worked and the cows took off and allowed me to finish my hike. I'm no city slicker but I haven't really been around a whole lot of cows. Now I know how to deal with them.
A little cactus forest I found.
Blocking my trail. When I saw this on the trail I thought "This is such BS".
