Black Mountain

A couple weeks ago my scheduled changed at work and I know have a lot more time off. So what to do with that time? More hiking. So I decided to take the family to Cave Creek so I could scout out some trails. As far as the outdoors goes my trip was an epic fail. Instead of going to the part of Cave Creek where there are trails I can take the kids on I ended up lost looking for the trail for Black Mountain. While lost I happened to come up on a small museum and it was free. So we decided to check it out. It had some pottery and artifacts that were 1300+ years old.  So the trip wasn't a total waste.

The next day I decided to find the trail up the mountain, this time by myself. I ended up parking on the side of the road by a resort and walking up. As I got out of my car a middle aged woman asked me if I'm military. Now I was wearing my Border Patrol hat but she asked if I am military. I told her no and I got asked the dumbest question of the year. "Why do you have your gun then?" And these people are what is wrong with America. First off there shouldn't be a privileged few who are above the rest of us. Second why the hell would being military (off duty of course) be a good reason to have a gun on the trail? Are there Taliban on the trail? Are we in a war zone? No, we are in the middle of the desert and every non felon citizen has the right to carry if they want. There's my rant of the day.

So anyways I started my hike from the Villas and it took me 49 minutes to get to the top. That is 49 minutes with taking pictures. Overall it's shorter and much easier than my normal hike at Daisy Mountain. It's only 2.5 miles with about 1100 feet of elevation so it's a quick and steep one. But for about half an hour of those 49 minutes it's a good cardio workout because the trails has a lot of gain over a short period of time.

From the top of the mountain I could see Daisy Mountain to my north, Tonto National Forest, and even downtown Phoenix. I think it was a pretty good hike I just won't be adding it as part of my workout routine because it's too short. The side I went up had some pretty good views of the city but what you can't see from that side are all the homes built into the south side of the mountain. On the south side there are mansions built into the rocks. Some of them are built for show while others you can hardly see anything but the glass reflecting. I think it's a pretty cool place to have a house.

One of those peaks just off to the left of center is Daisy Mountain.

All the hot air balloons taking off over the valley.
