Memorial Weekend Trip To SoCal

It's been a long time since I've updated my blog so there's going to be a lot of posts this week. I'll start with Memorial weekend. This year for Memorial Day we went back to SoCal to see the family. Not only did we see the family but we kind of went camping at Heart Bar. I say "kind of" because my family's idea of camping is parking a trailer in a big trailer park that they call a campground in the mountains.
So Saturday morning before the holiday we drove up to West Palm Beach to fly back west. I have to say, the older Adri is, the harder it is to fly with her. Adri loves airplanes. She loves them so much that even though we got up at 3:30 she wouldn't sleep in the car because she kept on talking about the airplane. When we finally got on the airplane she wouldn't sleep like she used to. She was all over the place. She wanted to read the pamphlets and show us the airplane and even though we were on the airplane she kept wanting us to draw the airplane (always her first pick when we ask her what to draw). Finally when were 15 minutes from landing in Houston she crashed out. So guess who had to wake up from their nap? It's always fun waking a toddler up from their nap right?

When we landing in Ontario I got a text message from Cassandra saying that it had snowed that morning at the campground. Here it is in late May, it's 75 degrees when I wake up in Florida, and we're going to the mountains where it's in the 20's.

Later that day an old friend and personal bodyguard from highschool, Shaun, came up to see us and we all took a hike to the meadow. This is the meadow we used to play in as kids. It was probably only in the low 50's and Shawn was determined to catch a snake. I thought he was crazy trying to find a snake in the mountains in this kind of weather. I did a lot of back packing as a teen and finding snakes in the mountains isn't the easiest task. Well sure enough on our way back to the campground Shawn found a full grown Pacific Rattlesnake. All the girls were scared and lecturing us about getting bitten. And when I say girls, I'm including my brother in law. JK Jeff, but he was on the list of people afraid of the snake and I think I heard screams. Shaun and I were able to lift the log it was under and Shaun pinned it down with a tree branch. Once he got it pinned down I held it for him and he whacked it 3 or 4 times over the head and then decapitated it. On the way back to the campground/trailer park Jeremy wanted to hold the snake. I warned him that dead snakes will pee on you. He didn't listen to my advice. When we got back to camp Shaun cleaned out the snake, removed the gopher inside, and cooked it up. Tasted like chewy chicken.

Saturday night we stayed up as late as we could around the campfire until finally it was just too stinkin cold. Sunday morning I went out and it was 24 degrees! At least it warms up pretty quick though. Later in the morning we decided to take a hike to a spot down by the highway. This was one of only two times the entire weekend my mom came out of the trailer. I don't want to get into all the details as it's not really something I like talking about, but anyone interested can read it on my sister's blog. Basically my mom has dementia and things have been going downhill over the last few years.

After running around and exploring everything Adri was getting tired so we left to go back to camp. I was trying to carry her but she decided she wanted to walk. So I put her down and she did her last sprint down the road, trying to stay on the yellow line in the middle of course, and then out of no where she decided she was done and laid down in the street. This kid cracks me up. I picked her up from the street and she was asleep instantly. That night Jeff and my dad made the best dutch oven peach pie. I went back for seconds, thirds, and fourths, and then I lost count.

Monday morning we packed it up and went back to Riverside where it was a nice 88 degrees. Much better weather. We had a bbq and Shaun came over again and everyone wanted to have Adri open her birthday presents early from them. Tuesday we all went to Jose's for lunch. It's one of my favorite Mexican restuarants, my favorite in Riverside. Everytime I go back there I have to binge on Mexican food because it's so horrible on the East Coast. So that's what I did, I binged and I'm not ashamed.

Right before we went out to lunch I noticed that Adri was a little warm. Adri has only been sick once in her life and that was Christmas 17 months prior in Riverside. It's like Riverside is a curse for the kid. She has only peed on me twice in her life. Both times were at my old church building in Riverside. For some reason while in that building her diaper likes to leak. What are the odds? So I knew that her being a little warm probably meant she was going to get sick especially since she had been around both my sister's kids and they like to get my daughter sick for some reason. So we kept giving her medicine and she would be fine for a while and then after a couple hours she would turn back into a cranky clingy bug. The worst part of her being sick was that I had to leave the next day and Natalie had to work in San Diego, leaving Adri with my sister who already has 4 kids to take care of.

Tuesday night we went for pizza and then stayed up until 3 in the morning playing games and eating ice cream. I knew I would be paying for this later since after just a couple hours sleep I would have to fly back to West Palm, drive an hour home, go to sleep for a couple short hours, then go to work in Miami. But I stayed up anyways until everyone else had to go to bed.

So that was my trip. Unfortunately this was a short trip, way too short. I just didn't have enough time off yet being how I just started the new job in April. So Wednesday morning I went out for breakfast with my dad and then had a nice long flight, no three flights, to get back home. Natalie stayed until Friday and got to experience all the fun of flying across the country with a toddler alone.
