RIP Summer and RIP Adri's Appendix

Today will most likely be our last triple digit day for the year and it couldn't come soon enough. This summer has not be my favorite. It got hot later than normal, refused to rain this whole monsoon season, then got hot late in summer. They keep saying it is going to rain. A couple days ago there was an 80% chance and we got nothing! I'm over it. I just want some rain and clouds.

A couple weeks ago my dad gave us a visit. A week later Natalie's sisters came out and just left a few days ago. Today one of Natalie's sister's came back and tomorrow my dad will be back. Why so soon? Adri's appendix was murdered Wednesday night.

Tuesday around 4:30 in the afternoon Adri started having bad stomach pains and was hunched over screaming in the hallway. Adri has been to the ER a few times over this in the last couple years and they never found anything. Well Natalie took her to the ER Tuesday night. They did blood work, x-ray, ultrasound, and found nothing. She had a low grade fever and they sent her home.

Wednesday Natalie took Adri to the Doctor at 9:30 am. They did urine test and found nothing so they suggested she goes to a different ER where they insisted doing another ultrasound. Adri's white blood count was normal but her CRP was high so they did a CT (Natalie refused to leave without one). At 4:30 I got a call from Natalie telling me she needs her appendix removed. Originally I was told it would happen Thursday morning. I got my stuff together and happened to catch Maurina right as she was getting ready to leave. After I told her what was going on she decided to stay home and watch Zach. As I was pulling into the hospital, which is about half an hour away in Glendale, Natalie called me telling me they were taking her back for surgery. So at this point I'm running into the hospital, trying to hold my pants up because I forgot my belt, and I had no idea where I'm going. Luckily an off duty nurse stopped me and escorted me over. Here it was just after 5 and I'm thinking they're taking her back right away. Then we find out she isn't scheduled until 8:30 and they ended up taking her back at 9:15. Adri was the 5th kid in that hospital to have an appendix removed that day. The doctor told us if the appendix didn't burst and isn't leaking she can go home the next day. Otherwise she has to stay 4-5 days. Statistically odds are about 70/30 in her favor according to the doctor.

Natalie told me Adri was scared. I never really got to see it. By the time I got there she was calm. They gave her Versed in pre-op and I didn't think she would be awake by the time they got her to the door. She was awake laughing and being silly as long as I could see her even though she told me she was feeling dizzy the second they injected it. They next morning she actually told me that she remembers them turning on the bright lights in the OR before she passed out. I was starving and they told us we had about an hour and a half until we could see her so I walked over to Wing Stop. As I'm walking out the door to walk back to the hospital Natalie texted me telling me surgery is done and her appendix didn't burst. I rushed back to the hospital in the heat just to wait another hour for them to wake Adri up.

Dean had been there all day. I got him to sleep right before surgery by putting on...... It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia soundtrack on my phone. He stared at my phone like a crazy baby until he fell asleep. We'll once we got Adri into her room Dean woke up and was being a little terror. Natalie probably would have stayed all night if I hadn't pushed her and Dean out the door around 1 am so they can go home and sleep. By 2 the nurse was giving Adri 1 ml of morphine. Not even five minutes later she decided she was going to get up and take her first walk, which is important if she wants to go home. Adri slept until just before 6. She got up and took a walk while they made us breakfast. By 8 the doctor was in and we were already filling out discharge papers. Natalie was on her way to the hospital and was bringing Dean with her. Lucky for all us we were packing up our stuff and just getting ready to walk out when Natalie came down the hall. We didn't have to deal with another day of Dean in the hospital.

Now she's back to her happy self with just a little itchy and burning around the three incisions and what we think is a mild antibiotic rash. I'm so glad this is over. The stomach aches have been going on for a couple years and this last trip to the ER(s) gave me a lot of anxiety. I know it's a very minor surgery and there are rarely complications but that doesn't matter. For myself surgery is no big deal. Been there, done that, doesn't phase me. But when it's my daughter I can't help but think about what if she's the rare case where it doesn't go well. Two days of a lot of anxiety topped off with no sleep. Lucky for us everything went as it should and we are done with this.

A few weeks ago. Dean pretending he's not a little terror baby.

I believe this was the day I was smoking meat all day in the big green egg.

A couple weeks ago we finally got together with our friends for dinner. I decided I'm going to smoke some stuff but I couldn't decide between a brisket or a pork butt. I ended up buying a 14.5 pound brisket, an 8 pound pork butt, and a whole chicken. I spent the entire day smoking the meat. I thought I was going to be bored out there but Zach decided to join me. He was asking questions about the moon and sun so I showed him some YouTube videos of how they were created. Zach kept telling me how it was the best day and he loves family day with me.

I have a decent sized smoker and it was full. I had to take the brisket off before doing the chicken. I don't like the way the top is not adjustable so I made my own foil chimney cap to control the temperature better.

After all day in the sun I got this. The only problem is it was hot as hell that day, I think around 107, so even though I was drinking fluids all day I wasn't feeling so great once I had dinner and a beer. After dinner I wasn't feeling so great for the next couple days.

Zach and I finally setup my ladder ball while we were smoking.

We had this thunderhead pop up a couple weeks ago. We never did get rain from this. Even though it was 105 outside I sat on my balcony for an hour just watching this thing.

This is in the dark. Even Thunderheads still lighting up.

The next day we had a river of mud coming out of the sky. Again we didn't get the rain at my house.

When my dad visited we went up to see his brother in Dewey. Afterwards we went to the Prescott Brewery for an early dinner and some beer. The food was good but as far as beer it was the worst brewery I've been to. Nothing had any flavor. Funny thing is a block away if Four Peaks, which happens to make one of my favorite lagers.
The next day we went to a bbq at a coworkers house. When we got back to my house Jeremy and I were looking for scorpions at the park. We ended up catching this tarantula and then Jeremy caught a desert gecko in my yard. We fed the tarantula a grasshopper. It killed the grasshopper immediately but waited a half hour to eat it.

Early on Labor Day Jeremy and I went coyote hunting. I found this burro. I'm wondering if  mountain lion got it because the back looks like it got snapped back.

Jeremy put the skull back together.

Our hunt sucked. It was the opening weekend of dove season which is never a good time to hunt. So after killing brain cells in the heat we went to the community center to cool off.

Adri on the high dive.

How to spot my daughter. Raise those horns.

Jeremy.

Zach decided he was going to try the diving board. The first time he walked the plank really slow, looked over the edge, and was hesitant to jump in. After the first jump there was no more fear. Eventually he just started running right off the board.
Spider-Man jumps.

Me.
I think this was the day after Labor Day. Again no rain for us. The lightning did start a fire on the New River Mesa, which is now 10 days later over 9,000 acres.

One day after work I found this owl in my yard. I thought it was a baby. Turns out it is an Elf Owl. They only get 5 inches long and weigh 1/4 pound.

Adri in pre-op.
Taking a walk around 6 in the morning. She got two laps in.
I got Adri's unicorn Sparkles a new friend.
Last night we had a little sleep over so we could keep an eye on Adri.
