A Busy Weekend

So I had quite the busy weekend. I woke up early Saturday to do yard work and I failed to get up before the heat started. I did finally get the concrete on my driveway moved. I was struggling to get it on a dolly, it weight 300-400 pounds, but my neighbor being the good guy he is saw me and came over to help. We put it on the dolly, tied it up, and moved it. So another project complete.

Then in the afternoon we went to "look" at furniture with no intention of actually buying that day. Well as luck would have it we didn't have to wait for our next paycheck to buy the furniture because they gave me 0% interest. I was going to just pay it off before summer but I decided since it's 0% interest, and the car is not, we are going to pay extra into the car and just do the furniture in payments. So anyways we got a nice big sectional couch, a king sized bed with a mattress free of springs (all memory foam and latex), and a matching trunk to put all our extra blankets in. I'm pretty happy with the stuff we got, it's comfortable and I can finally enjoy being inside the house without my back hurting from our miserable old couch, which was retired to the other side of the living room.

I also got our old queen sized bed moved to the guest room so now Hotel Alves is open for visits. It was a hot and muggy day so it was quite a workout getting everything moved.

Also on our list of activities. Flamingo Gardens had free plant day for members. We have been members now for 2 or 3 years and this is the first time I have got an ad for free plant day. I think the idea is genius. We paid 75 bucks for our dual membership and they gave us two free plants. Retail value, maybe 30 bucks. But they actually grew them there so it didn't cost them that and it lures people into renewing their membership every year in hopes that they will do this again. I got an almond bush, doesn't grow almonds but it has white flower spikes that smell like almonds. Natalie got this plant with fragrant purple flowers. I forgot what it's called but I have the card for it at home. Both of our plants attract butterflies. I'll post pictures after I figure out where I'm putting them. I'm thinking they'll make a great addition to my expanding butterfly garden which happens to be doing so good that a group of people stopped in front of my house yesterday to look at it.

I also planted a honey mango tree yesterday and a couple more papayas. I moved a couple of my pine trees because I think they were too close. After all the work in the heat I had to jump in my pool to cool off. The pool is feeling great this time of year and will be for another 7 months.

Some pictures I took Saturday morning. Pictures of the furniture and free plants on next blog.......

This is my frog pond. Nevermind the 3 pots with the weeds in them. One of the things I need to work on.

My lily pads. I thought I bought the one with the purple flowers, that is what they told me at Flamingo when I bought this in February. Turns out I got yellow. The flowers aren't as spectacular or big and they close a lot, but they're still pretty cool.

The little white flower next to it gross on my bog moss.

The work never ends when you have a house! I like the frog pond. I wanted to do one but Cody would be in it everytime we go outside. So I guess it'll have to wait til the kids are a little older and the water isn't so tempting.

Yeah, not expecting the projects to stop. Only way I could stop finding work is if you gave me 100K and a year off work to do what I want with the place. And even then I would probably get bored and find new projects. LOL.

We got the pool anyways so I guess if Adri's gonna jump in anything it's gonna be the pool. We also have the canal...I eventually want to put a bigger pond in the middle of the backyard with a bunch of tropical flowers around it and some purple lilly pads in the middle. We'll see if I can ever get that one done. 5 year plan?

We've been here 2 years and Jeff still hasn't finished the baseboards! Lol. Aren't you gonna put fence or something around the pool?? That is scary to have it open. There's a swim class I saw that starts for ages 6 months. They teach babies how to float and save themselves if they fall into a pool. I saw a video on it, it was kinda sad watching that baby float in the water but a good thing she knew how to save herself.

We have a baby guard in the attic. We'll put it back up in a year or so. I've heard that if you bought your house after 2006 you are required to have a fence or baby guard so you dont get sued if a neighbor wanders into your pool.

I think its absolutely ridiculous for many reasons. All because one kid fell in someone else's pool so now they force fences on everyone. Hold the parents responsible, the kid was tresspassing. Stupid. And the thing that makes it even more tarded is the fact that there is a canal right behind me. So if a kid falls in the canal who are the parents going to sue? The problem is liberalism, "blame someone else because you werent watching your kid". People need to watch their kids. This is Florida, there is water everywhere. Eventually I'll do a real fence around the yard because I dont like the baby guard and I dont want the kid wandering out to the canal. But a real fence requires a permit......

I disagree with you Joe. And you'll find out when you're a parent. Kids are quick and it only takes a minute for your back to be turned.I remember Aubrey opening the front door before we had our security screen door and she was out in the front for a couple minutes before I realized she had escaped. All it takes is an instant...and if there are not gates separating your yards then I totally agree you should have a gate. That means that your neighbors could never even let the kids play in the backyard without a CONSTANT eye on their kids. Cuz like I said, it only takes a second.

They shouldnt anyways because there is a canal. Duh! Whats to keep them from falling into the canal? And if they can open the fence in your own yard they can open the fence to get in the neighbors yard. If people worry they should put a fence around their own yard instead of passing the responsibility onto everyone else. Especially since even if everyone has a fence you have a canal or lake everywhere you go. Look at my neighborhood on google maps. Its almost like Venice.

And its cheaper for a person to put a chain on their door to keep their own kid inside then for the neighbors to have to put up fences. Again, its passing the responsibility. Putting a chain on a door isnt very hard.

It's a good thing you know everything! Your children will never get into any trouble!

Blaming the problem on everyone else isnt the solution. The solution is finding ways to keep your kids on your own property. Even if everyone has a fence it doesnt solve the problem so why make everyone get a fence. The kid can open their fence just as easily, fall in a lake or canal, getting snatched by a gator, kidnapped, etc.... But its always someone else's fault.
